It's good to establish a firm criteria for ban escalation early on, so you don't have trouble with multiple versions floating around. If we trust each other enough to run our own SCP Wikis, then surely all members of the INT staff should be able to police the channel. Here's my suggestion for a simple, but flexible, system of ban escalation.
Short bans: For minor infractions that may be rude or disruptive but there's reason for leniency.
(24 hours-1 week)
Medium Bans: For people who should know better, and might have screwed up a few times before, but still had redeeming qualities.
(2 weeks-2 months)
Long Bans: When somebody really needs to get their act together because they seriously don't get it or have been given a few chances and still refuses to change their behavior.
(3 months-1 year)
Permaban: Trolls, miscreants, and malcontents. Truly irredeemable, at least for the foreseeable future.
Also, I have a suggestion for adding guidelines for channel operating in case folks haven't done it before, and to have a precedent in writing:
- Be professional. You don't have to be rude or act authoritative, just always be able to recognize when chat has shifted from a good to bad conversation that needs to be re-routed.
- Fair application of easy-to-understand rules is key to maintaining a healthy chat. Always explain to people why they've been banned and, if possible, give them a chance to appeal.
- Always be sure to follow the proper ban escalation procedure the same way for every user.
We've had a lot of problems on the main SCP Wiki chat from inconsistent application of our rules and ban procedures, as well as lacking proper operator training, so these instructions can hopefully be the start of fostering a chat structure which avoids these issues.
